Description

World War II Memorial

Location

Changi Chapel Museum,

Singapore

/  BACKGROUND

The Changi Chapel Museum exhibits the historical events of the Japanese occupation, a sensitive space for educating the public, and to provide an experience for them to understand, respect and empathise with the war sufferings. The site for the memorial is an empty plot of turf, an uncondensed and forgotten space that has been left neglected. It also serves as a transitional space from the carpark to the chapel. Here, the atmosphere is serene with a state of solemnity.

/  REPURPOSE

The design of the cenotaph is intended to revitalise the space, to give it a new experience, in contrast with the orderly yet cubic site, but still remain as sensitive to the context. The cenotaph serves as an extension of the chapel, a sensitive space to commemorate and reflect on the contributions of the war victims.

The concept is represented by a geometrical data, fabricated by a network of the Sook Ching massacre sites converging to the point of the Changi Chapel Museum on the map. The massacre sites are linked to the memorial to bring relevance to the events of the war, uniting the past and the present. The geometry is reflected on the façade of the memorial, pointing towards a prominent massacre site in the region where the most death occurred.
